Loving it & leaving it. April Edition.

LoveLeave_AprilWe are all consumers. And we find great things and not-so-great things by hearing what others think. So, here, now, I’m adding to all the existing reviews scattered about the Internet. Here are two things I came across this month — one that I’m loving, one that I’m leaving behind.

Loving: a new, everyday bag.
Leaving: a new, fancy mascara.

Loving: the bag, from Etsy shop, Sord. It zips, has a cross body strap AND shoulder straps, it’s super light-weight and super soft. Plus it’s handmade in the good ol’ U-S-of-A. I’ve only been wearing (using?) it about 3 weeks now, but I don’t see it going anywhere — or me going anywhere without it — soon. Worth every penny. I went between this, a Madewell tote and a Fossil bag for a while. I could not be happier with this decision.

Leaving: YSL mascara. With this one, it’s more like ‘Looks: 10, Dance: 3.‘ See, I should feel super stylish wearing/using/owning this mascara, but honestly, who is going to see that it looks so fancy other than Mr. GMET & #LouiseTheCat? The performance is lacking compared to my favorite Benefit They’re Real mascara. . It feels dry and the brush leaves a lot to be desired. Overall, not impressed.

What are you loving & leaving this month? Let me know. I’m always on the look for new things/ideas to love.

P.S. I received this YSL mascara from Influenster for testing and reviewing purposes. As always, the opinion here is mine, all mine.

Love in the Air Gets Me Every Time

tealhippo2I’m not sure if it’s because it’s Friday. Or because that means the weekend is tomorrow. Or because it’s been a long week. Or because Valentine’s Day is seven days away, but I am feeling the love. So, today. Because I love you guys to bits and pieces. I have not one, but TWO coupon codes for you for the Etsy Shop. Spend $20, get 10% off with code LOVE10. Spend $25, get 20% with code LOVE20.

The Ultimate Crafturday Gets Me Every Time

What exactly is an ultimate crafturday? It’s a Saturday featuring a craft show, as I mentioned Friday, with yours truly. The set-up looked like the above, with some slight merch changes throughout the day. This was my first ever craft show and I think it went pretty well. The layout of the entire show was a little screwy, and I didn’t get quite the amount of traffic I had hoped for. But, it was a great learning experience. Here are some more shots from the show.CraftShow_BizCards CraftShow_WallPlaque CraftShow_Setup CraftShow__PlaceCard CraftShow__Ornaments

All the unsold merchandise and more will be in my Etsy shop soon. Just in time for a little holiday shopping.

Fishs Eddy Gets Me Every Time

A few weeks ago, when I was in New York for work, I had a free evening to spend some time with my main man JJL. We ate cheese, drank wine and walked around the sweltering city, ducking into a few places to get a reprieve from the heat. One of the places we got to check out was Fishs Eddy, near Union Square. JJL had gifted me a few mugs from there a while back, so I was excited to check it out in real life.

As the proud owner of a new kitchen, you could say I was over-the-moon to be looking at so much dining and kitchen goodness. That said, I restrained myself as we are only now opening our wedding dishes. (exciting, right?) Anyhow, if I had been looking to throw a little kitsch into the kitchen, I might have picked up any of the pieces from this “Teddy & Bear” collection.

I mean, look at that close-up. “High Five.” It was almost calling my name. I love it.

And, if you were not into those mermaid bottle openers in the first photo, how about these owl bottle openers? Just too cool for school.  But, mermaids, Teddy, high fives and owls aside, my favorite thing in the entire store was one kitchen towel.

This towel is perfect (purrfect?) for any cat lover. I for one think it’s a perfect representation of my favorite lady, Louise, or any cat for that matter. It sums up how much she obeys us to the Tea Towel. Get it? Full of ’em today.

Check out Fishs Eddy online or in person if you’re ever in the city. They’ve got tons of great stuff that you might not need today, but you’ll probably find a use for tomorrow.

PS… @JJ, that link was intentional. Update your blog so we all know what you’re up to.

Completing A Tall Order Gets Me Every Time

We made it! Rather, we made them! All 500 of these Toyidermy business card holders were completed, painted, touched up and shipped out. And I couldn’t have done it without the help of my “partners-in-craft” who I can’t thank enough. | If you’re just tuning in, catch up with part 1 and part 2 of this story. |

It was a tedious job and I spent a lot of it kicking myself for accepting such a huge order with a tight timeline. But, once it was complete (and I caught up on some much-needed sleep) I felt so accomplished and happy I had taken on the challenge.

Each animal was meticulously painted by hand, sometimes with two coats. Then came the eyebrows and the Benefit logo stamp.

I think they turned out pretty darn good, don’t you? And now for some “beauty shots.” (pun intended.)

2012-12-17 12.07.55

I foud these bad boys on the internet and can only think that after I sent the herd to Benefit, they added this cute chain and tag. The zebra says “Nice brows, wild thing.” If you’re unfamiliar with Benefit, they are known for their wonderful brow products and their “brow bars.”

2012-12-17 12.08.03

And here’s another “brow cow” stolen from the internet, with the hangtag “How cow… what beautiful brows!”

So there you have it guys. That is the whole story of why I was missing in action for a little while at the end of the year. Thanks for bearing with me during those crazy times and this crazy story!

| If you are now so inspired to get your own animal business card holder, there are plenty in the shop right now. |

Painting A Tall Order Gets Me Every Time

So, what does 500 toy animals look like? A mess, quite honestly. And painting those 500 animals. Well, it’s an even bigger mess. Have a look.Benefit_During9

All 500 business card holders for this order were painted a shiny metallic pink. Then, they all got eyebrows, and the benefit seal on their “backs,” where the cards sit.

I couldn’t have done all this painting without the help of my dear husband, my good friend, Jill and my blogging friend, Emily. All three were a tremendous help as I pushed through to get these guys on their way to sunny California.

There was lots of paint. Lots of touch-ups. Lots of eyebrows. All in the name of beauty.

Benefit_During2One of my personal favorites was the “brow cow.” I first painted the eyebrows on the cow and thought they looked great, don’t you? Here’s a closer look at some of the other guys.

Benefit_During3 Benefit_During1 Benefit_During5 Benefit_During4Tomorrow, come back to see the full line up including rhinos, zebras, cows, giraffes and more. Plus, I’ll be throwing in a few “final presentation” photos I found on the web.

A Tall Order Gets Me Every Time

Remember a few months ago when things went radio silent with no warning or mention? And then this site went down altogether and I didn’t even know it until my mom told me (thanks, Mom)? Well, this is part one of the story of the reason why.

In early October I was contacted by a PR rep from Benefit Cosmetics about making some custom business card holders. Initially, it was 250-300 in quantity. Then that number jumped to 500… Of the same animal.

Let’s be honest, all I was thinking was, “where am I going to find 500 pigs?!” But, eventually, after a few samples sent and lots of emails exchanged, we settled on a mix of 7 animals and I got to work scouring my usual sources for the supplies.

I got my order in the same night we finalized the deal. Fast forward seven days later… No shipping notice. No tracking number. No delivery. Uh-oh… Order could not be fulfilled. What?! Commence freak out. I had just lost seven days of production time.

I could go into more horror stories of how the next order came in and the animals were too small. The next one the animals were too big. And the next was also cancelled by the company. Panic mode overload.

About 8 days before my shipping deadline, I finally got all my supplies (animals) in. And it was time to start some serious production. Production everywhere. There wasn’t a flat surface in our apartment that wasn’t covered with animals.

OK, who am I kidding? I really just split this into three posts so I could show you tons of gratuitous toy photos. Come back later this week to see these guys get a nice coat of paint.

Valentine Puns Get Me Every Time

Guess what?! It’s still not too late to get your Valentine’s Day gifts. There some new business card holders in the shop and ready to ship right away. (Well, as soon as this winter storm moves out of the way, that is.) All these little guys are pink and red and shiny and bright—just like your sweetheart.

Best of all, they will ship wrapped up and ready to deliver to your hubby, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, mom, dad, best friend or whomever your heart desires. Each one is complete with a quirky little Valentine message, “I can’t bear to be without you,” “I love you and I ain’t lion,” “You make my heart hop.”

Go check out the full Valentine’s collection over in my Etsy shop. All orders placed by Sunday evening will ship first thing Monday morning by USPS priority mail (2-3 days) so they’ll arrive for Thursday’s day of love!
